Unit of Measurement

A cubic yard is a three-dimensional measurement of volume (3 feet x 3 feet x 3 feet). Need help calculating how much you need? Use our calculator.

Weight Range

Bulk materials can vary in weight depending on moisture content. A cubic yard typically weighs approximately the following:

  • Mulch: 900 lbs – 1,100 lbs
  • Soil and compost: 1,600 lbs – 2,000 lbs

Load Capacity

For a standard pickup truck, we recommend limiting loads to a maximum of 1 cubic yard. Please refer to your vehicle or trailer manufacturer’s guidelines to determine how much weight you can safely carry. Bulk orders are sold in half-cubic-yard increments.

Road Limits

Be sure to follow any road weight or size limits that may apply in your area, especially when transporting heavy bulk materials.
